The company is named after Christopher Winter who was a great friend and supporter of the project and an advocate of sex and relationships education for young people. Chris died of an HIV related illness in 1996. Little did we know back then that CWP would go on to be much more than a "project". However like the Eden Project in Cornwall we continue to learn and grow.
How does CWP contribute to reducing teenage pregnancy rates? In working with primary aged pupils our intention is that they go to secondary school already confident and able to talk about sexual health issues articulately and without embarrassment. These pupils are better equipped to deal with the more explicit issues raised in the secondary curriculum. When children have not been taught SRE at primary school a lot of time is wasted having to catch up at a time when they may be increasingly vulnerable to unintended pregnancy.
CWP supports primary and secondary teachers to develop the skills and confidence they need to teach effective SRE. Ultimately they are helping young people to consider the implications of having a sexual relationship, to be assertive and to make informed decisions.
"Education has also played a key role; since 2001 the award-winning Christopher Winter Project has trained over a thousand local teachers to deliver sex and relationships education." City and Hackney NHS Press Release 2011, explaining a 37% decrease in teenage pregnancies.
What does CWP offer schools? We model effective teaching approaches in the classroom and provide teachers with:
